From Doing to Leading:
Making the Transition from Frontline Development to Management
I’ve known many development professionals who made the career change to management and either didn’t enjoy it, or weren’t very good at it. That’s because the skills required to be a great fundraiser aren’t necessarily those needed to be an effective manager.
Like many, I began my fundraising career as a gift officer and moved into management, culminating in a role in which I supervised more than 70 staff members, led a philanthropic foundation, and served on the executive cabinet of a university. I’ll share lessons I learned along the way and discuss current research and best practices.
Those who can benefit from this workshop include: development professionals who are moving into management positions, and leaders and supervisors responsible for hiring fundraising managers.
In this workshop we:
- Compare the roles of frontline fundraiser and manager
- Explore the responsibilities of a development manager
- Discuss the attributes of effective managers
- Discuss ways to work effectively with your bosses, colleagues, and the staff you supervise
- Examine goal setting and performance assessment
Workshop content and length can be customized to your needs.
